about the playground

On a mission to connect a community of people looking for more from their movement practice

our mission

Everyone should have the opportunity to experience belonging & connection! We create space for all to join a flourishing yoga community.

The idea for The Yoga Playground was planted in 2020 during the time of social distancing and following the closure of our beloved local yoga studios. We aimed to provide a virtual space that reverses the effects of social isolation through intentional, playful movement and authentic connection among community members.

Now that it is once again safe for many of us to gather physically as a community, we have opened a studio space on E Street in the heart of Southie.

how it works

When looking at our classes , you will notice we have both in-studio classes and virtual community classes.

Our virtual community classes are all donation-based, so students may pay what they wish or are able. All income goes directly to our teachers. These classes are held via Zoom. You’ll receive the link in your email after you register.

Our in-person classes are limited in capacity so we recommend you sign-up before you come! Our in-person studio is at 249 E Street, South Boston. Arrive about 10 minutes before class begins, bring a mat, water, and your wonderful self. Wear comfortable clothes that allow for movement and you don’t mind getting a little sweaty.

Teachers are encouraged to explore their own personal style. No two classes are the same — give them all a try!

 class descriptions

all levels yoga

Whether it's your first yoga class or you’ve lost count, this class holds something for you. Each flow is intelligently sequenced by your teacher to weave poses together in a vinyasa style class. The physical practice of yoga asana provides a metaphor for the shifting of your awareness, and creates a union between your self and your consciousness.

flow and restore

Rest allows the mind, body, and nervous system to settle. This balanced combination of slow intentional flow and longer held supportive postures will draw your awareness in, leaving you with a still mind and sense of calm.

mat pilates

A systematic approach to movement that focuses on building strength and flexibility in order to counteract misalignment from habitual movements of daily life. With a focus on the core and powerhouses of the body, mat pilates will leave you feeling strong, invigorated, and mobile.

power flow

An express version of our all levels yoga offering. This 45 minute class gets straight to the point by dialing in on a specific focus and cutting out any fluff. While this class gets flowing quickly, it won’t compromise on the cool down and rest. Perfect for anyone who needs a short, sweet, and efficient way to add movement and intention to their day.

strong foundations

This class focuses on creating strength through the core and glutes while working on basic yoga poses. This is a great class for beginners looking to build up their strength and start (or re-start) their yoga journey.

heated yoga

Heated to 85F, this warmed version of an all levels flow provides an opportunity to safely move deeper into postures while laughing through a light sweat. The heat facilitates a greater range of motion in muscles, softening of connective tissues, and increased circulation aiding the body in a faster recovery.

yogi bears

Yogi Bears is our signature kids class! Filled with music, movement, and story time, this 30 minute class will get kids up and moving. Children must be at least 3 years old to attend.

frequently asked questions

What is the Yoga Playground?

We are a community created by former studio work studies. When our studio permanently closed as a result of quarantine, we found ourselves lonely, scattered, and very lost. The Yoga Playground is our tool to reknit an unravelled community via a virtual yoga studio. The mission of the Yoga Playground is to create a space where people can gather in community through yoga in this strange and isolating time. Our donation-based classes aim to provide an opportunity to experience belonging and connection through playful and intentional practice.

Are classes free? How can I pay my teacher?

Classes at the Yoga Playground donation-based, meaning you can pay what you can for class. If you are able and would like to pay for class, you can send money directly to your teacher through Venmo. All of our teachers’ Venmos are listed in their teacher bios and in the confirmation email you receive when you sign up for class.

I’m new to yoga, can I still take class with you?

Yes 100%! No experience is needed to practice at the Yoga Playground. All of our classes are beginner friendly, but you may want to let your teacher know if you are new. Beginners are encouraged to try our different classes to see what works best for them. Taking classes from different teachers can be helpful in finding out what you like best! See you on your mat.

What do I need for class?

The only things you really need for class is yourself, a device with Zoom downloaded, and some space to move around. You may want to wear comfortable clothes that you can move in easily and keep hydrating liquids nearby. If you have a yoga mat, great! If you don’t, that’s fine too! Sometimes props can be useful in class, but if you don’t have yoga blocks or a strap, books and a belt or towel work just as well! Oh, and bring an open mind and sense of humor if ya got em ;)

How do I sign up for class?

Visit our schedule and choose the class you would like to sign up for. Follow the steps as it prompts you to enter your information, and after registering you will receive a confirmation email with a Zoom link to join class. Try to log in about 5 minutes before class to get set up to and chat with your teacher!

How does Zoom yoga work? Do I need to keep my camera on?

Approach Zoom yoga with your own level of comfort. It’s completely up to you whether you’d like to keep your camera on during class. If you do have your camera on, your teacher will be able to give you more helpful cues and adjustments, especially if you set your camera up so that your side profile is showing. If you’re not comfortable with having your camera on yet, no worries! The Yoga Playground is here to provide a space for you to feel safe: to be yourself and to connect with an authentic and caring community.
